Aaron's Stuff

You've reached a page that deals with all sorts of things I think about, do, and otherwise tinker with in a way that can't be encapsulated in a blog. This is a wiki, of course, but it's also my sandbox. There is no guarantee that any of the things here are meaningful, complete, accurate, well-thought-out, or in any way sane. You've been warned.

If for some reason you want an account here (probably because I've suggested the idea), contact me. There are plenty of contact channels available.

UN Pay Calculator

I made this some time back to attempt to understand what I might expect in a United Nations paycheck. It is clear that this is inaccurate, so if you are here for that, just be aware of this fact.

Games

Encroach!

So far just a proof of concept reinvention of the old Dots and Squares game. The idea was to bring it into the 21st Century or something by adding capturable power-ups of various sorts. I wrote more about this here: http://blog.aaron-helton.com/2010/03/dots-and-squares-digital-social/

The game, as it currently exists, can be played here: http://aaronhelton.kodingen.com/encroach/

Systems

CIRPS

The Continuous Improvement Role Playing System is a new way of creating and managing role playing games. It is designed to eliminate the concept of discrete character classes and levels, and to the greatest extent possible codifies character creation and management and adventure building in a computer readable way. The system has elements of numerous game systems, but is most similar to D20.

CIRPS is intended to be agnostic of settings and only provides a framework by which you, the game developer, may build or adapt your own world or setting. As such, no actual races, skills, talents, spells, equipment, monsters, or locations will be detailed here, but the rules for developing them will be. A complete medieval fantasy setting built on CIRPS will be available alongside the release of CIRPS.

CIRPS is a copyrighted work and is the property of its author, Aaron Helton. It is hereafter licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike Version 2.0 license. The game mechanics and concepts may be incorporated into derivative products (either free or commercial), and they may be distributed freely as long as this license accompanies them and proper attribution is given.

Earth 10K

Synopsis

Ten thousand years after The Great Collapse, an event that nearly destroyed all life on the planet, descendants of humanity have begun to crawl out of their darkest ages, establishing new pockets of civilization in an attempt to reclaim their former glory. Their now-forgotten technologies have altered them profoundly, creating completely new kinds of creatures, human and … not. Clues to their origins are buried in expansive epics and oral traditions, and they are scattered across the surviving tribes, told and retold in numerous disparate languages and reshaped by divergent cultures. New gods have arisen in their mythologies to replace long-forgotten old ones, and they practice a mysterious form of magic called Harvesting.

But just as they are beginning to reestablish themselves, threat of extinction once again clouds their future. Can the rag-tag children of humanity uncover the ghosts of their collective past in time to avert the trap their ancestors unwittingly set for them?

Earth 10K is a fantasy role playing setting in far-future Earth. It blends traditional fantasy with science fiction ala Arthur Clark's pronouncement regarding technology and magic.
